Mission Statement

The Sam’s Day family fun event was established by the Lack family of Burlington, Ontario in 2005 as an annual birthday and cancer remission celebration for their youngest son Sam who has battled neuroblastoma, a rare but deadly form of childhood cancer.  The event commemorates Sam’s on-going journey to wellness and raises funds for The James Fund at SickKids which supports research and advances in treatment for neuroblastoma.

Plans for Sam's Day 2008, scheduled for Saturday June 7th, 2008 at the Brant Hills Community Centre from 1 - 4:30pm are underway!

Sam's Day 2007 - Thanks to the generous support of the Burlington community, more than $48,000 was raised this year.  Sam's day 2007 was a 4th Birthday and 2nd Remission Anniversary celebration for Sam.  The festivities were enjoyed by almost 700 people.

Sam’s Day 2006 was a 3rd birthday and 1st year remission anniversary celebration for Sam. The event took place on June 10th from 1-4 pm at the Brant Hills Community Centre, Burlington and raised $27,000 for The James Fund for Neuroblastoma Research at SickKids.  Sam had surgery at SickKids in March 2005 after chemo was unsuccessful in halting the growth of his tumor.  Sam's surgery was a success and kick-started his remission.

Sam’s Day 2005 raised nearly $18,000 for McMaster Children’s hospital where Sam had chemo and continues to have on-going care at the oncology clinic. More than 400 people attended Sam’s Day 2005 and the event generated local media interest.

The James Fund for Neuroblastoma Research at SickKids

In a desperate attempt to save their son, the Birrell family started The James Fund for Neuroblastoma Research at SickKids in hopes of finding new treatment options that could save James.  Since his death in 2001, The James Fund has become Canada's leading neuroblastoma initiative and has helped SickKids Hospital become a significant player in neuroblastoma research globally.

The James Fund is a “restricted fund” meaning that every dollar raised by the Fund goes directly to support research and investigation into new therapies and ultimately a cure for neuroblastoma, with no deduction for overhead. Raising a minimum of $25,000 will support up to one year of research on neuroblastoma. To learn more visit www.jamesfund.ca

While neuroblastoma is only the 5th most common cancer in childhood, it is responsible for a disproportionate number of deaths due to cancer in children (8-10% of all childhood cancers). The current 5 year survival rate for children with neuroblastoma and wide spread disease is just is 20-25%. The mortality rate for childhood leukemia was once 85% but with new developments in treatment through research, leukemia now has an 85% survival rate. It’s possible to offer children with neuroblastoma the same hope for survival.
