Sam's Day Recognized as SickKids Donor Partner

November 6, 2008 - On behalf of "Sam's Day", Sam Lack, brother Ben, mom Andrea and Auntie Jill, attended a donor / fundraiser recognition evening on November 6th at SickKids. A "Sam's Day (Sam Lack, Family & Friends)" plaque was added to the "Partners" section of the Donor Wall on the main level. If you are ever at SickKids look us up on the wall...supporters and friends like you have made this lasting legacy for Sam possible. Thank you for the $135,000 and counting that you have helped us raise over the past 4 years since Sam's journey began...every cent brings us closer to the promise of hope for kids like Sam that fight cancer.

Burlington Kids Deliver $44,000 to SickKids for Pediatric Cancer Research

Wednesday August 6, 2008 – Yesterday, five year old cancer survivor Sam Lack who is the namesake of Burlington’s annual Sam’s Day family fun day event was joined by his brother and other young friends as he delivered the proceeds from this year’s event to the Hospital for Sick Children.

Breaking New: Sam's Day Research Wins Global Award

The research project funded by Sam’s Day since 2006 (2005 Sam’s Day proceeds went to MacKids) has been recognized as the best neuroblastoma research in the world at a global conference in Japan held last week!!

Sam’s Day fundraising has made some of the most significant impact on advances in neuroblastoma treatment. This is a profound accomplishment we should all be very proud of. Without our funds this research would not have been possible.

Dr. David Kaplan, head of cancer research at SickKids received a cash prize for this “best research”; he has decided to donate the prize to Sam’s Day.

October 23, 2007 Press Release

Screening of Approved Drugs Uncovers Promising Candidates Including Rapamycin Now In Clinical Study

The attached press release describes current research being done by Dr. Kaplan and other researchers at SickKids labs funded by The James Fund, in particular the Sam Lack Drug Discovery Project. Using their screening process, the researchers searched more than 5,000 drugs and uncovered 47 candidates that show good potential against neuroblastoma, including rapamycin, on which the researchers are currently focusing. Of the drugs recognized in the screening, 40 of the 47 have never been used to treat neuroblastoma. One particular drug is rapamycin which has already been studied in an animal model of neuroblastoma and produced promising results; rapamycin is now in clinical studies.
